Joanne McKay

After several years working in corporate administration, I began working in the property industry which provided my initial insight into asset management. In 1995 I commenced my Diploma in Financial Markets at the Securities Institute of Australia (now Finsia). I particularly enjoyed studying the stockbroking related subjects and thought that I may pursue a career involving share trading.

Upon completion of my Diploma in 1998, I joined a small financial planning firm in Sydney. It was here that I soon realised that it is extremely difficult to consistently pick the "winning shares" and that there is significantly more to financial planning than investment advice. I decided that I would like to become an "expert" in the field and studied for the next four years part-time, completing my Diploma of Financial Planning in 2002. In 2003 I was awarded the Certified Financial Planner designation (CFP®).

In my view a financial plan is not a "set and forget" document, which gathers dust in the corner of your study. It is an ongoing process of working together to achieve measurable and worthwhile goals. To do this requires a close working relationship and regular review.

Being one of only three like-minded principals in a small financial planning firm is important to me. This provides the ability to ensure that a highly tailored service can be provided to all of our clients at a commensurate cost. I believe that a boutique practice can provide a level of personal client attention generally not possible within a large organisation.
